Dessert for Breakfast

Can you believe it’s already Friday?  I am trippin’ out – I have no idea where this week went and there are just a few days left until we leave for our whirlwind trip across the U.S.!  I don’t have the words to tell you just how excited I am to be adventuring and seeing so many loved ones!   I’m working hard on staying present and enjoying every single second up until the trip though, because I know it’ll all be over before I know it! 

I’ve got a few things on the agenda for today, including cooking up some yummy treats for tomorrow’s trunk show and continuing to make earrings, but I did finally put together that tutorial on how to wire-wrap a simple drop earring [it’ll be posted in a few hours!]. 

To fuel my day, I started with a bowl of my Almond Joy Oats.


In the mix:

  • oat bran with chia [I followed my steel cut oats with chia recipe, but just ground up the oats before cooking]
  • 1 serving chocolate protein powder
  • 1 Tbsp coconut flakes
  • handful of chopped almonds

Since today is my rest day, I opted for coconut flakes rather than coconut butter to save me quite a few calories [35 versus 100 calories], but this bowl is absolutely delicious with the coconut butter subbed in.  I love the crunch of almonds in my oats, but ultimately I chose the nuts over the almond butter for the same reason—it saved me an extra 50 calories or so.  I’m not sure I’ve explained it on here before, but I fuel myself with more calories on the days that I’m active and less calories on the days where I’m less active, so that I’m creating a similar calorie deficit [cals out minus cals in] just about every day. 

Breakfast was DELICIOUS—my protein powder doesn’t have much sugar at all, so it doesn’t seem dessert-like at all, eve if it’s named after a candy bar.  And now I’ve got to get back to work! 

But before I go, I have a blog-related question for you all: I’ll be off-island for about three weeks starting next Tuesday and I’m not sure what to do about my posts.  On one hand, I can’t imagine leaving you all without posts for three whole weeks, and I’d love to share some of my experiences with you while travelling.  On the other hand, though, I want to be able to be 100% present while on vacation [I owe it to myself + those I’ll be with] and not get frustrated with having to post [I never want to become stressed out by blogging].  Maybe I could post every few days, when I have the time and resources?

It’s Wednesday.  Three days into the week.

Oops. Who me?

While I’ve sort of slacked off with the blog—and taken an extra day on top of the long weekend—I do have something to show for it.



I’ve been in Creation mode the past few days, as I’m preparing for my first trunk show this weekend.  I’ll be selling Ho`omaika`i jewelry as well as offering some of my guilt-free treats that day, so if you happen to be in town, stop by ReVive Boutique in the old Kahului Shopping Center from 3-5pm this Saturday!  [A portion of the proceeds will benefit Women Helping Women, Maui’s only domestic violence agency.]

I’m completely nervous about the show, and I’m totally unsure as to how many people will be showing up, so I’m just trying to create as many pieces as I can.  If need be, I can always take orders the day of. 

I’ve also been watching random movies on my computer and listening to new music while I create.  Here are the most recent:

I obviously should never be a critic because I like everything. But really, they’re all good!

I’m still trying to decide whether or not I like my oats in bran form [I simply ground my steel cut oats before cooking],


[The texture is much more softer, like Cream of Wheat.  I really like the dense nuttiness of the steel cut oats whole, though.]

and I realized that my absolute favorite gluten-free crackers, Nut Thins, are actually made of mostly white rice!  Lame!  I’ve been really focusing on cleaning up my nutrition, so white starches are out.  Which means Nut Thins are also out.  To replace the hole they’ve left, we’ve been snacking on these:


Lucky for me, Lundberg makes a variety of different flavored rice cakes, and they’re all made with brown rice

Last but not least, I’ve been getting everything in order for our trip across the U.S. next week [we leave in t-minus 6 days!!].  In three weeks we’ll hit:

  • Oregon
  • Colorado
  • Pennsylvania
  • Delaware
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Connecticut
  • Massachusetts
  • Washington, D.C.
  • Washington state

That’s more states than I think I’ve been to date!  I’m—obviously—a small-town girl, so going into the city makes me a bit nervous [the first time I saw San Francisco I was literally scared stiff], but I’m super excited to explore and see what real city people are like.  Plus, we’ll be stopping to see tons of good friends while we’re out there!  If you’re in one of those cities, I’d love to get your input on places to go + maybe even meet up! 

I’m planning to do another tutorial-type post on simple wire-wrapping this week since I’ve been doing so much of it lately.  If you’re interested, let me know if there are any specific questions you’d like to have answered.  I can’t promise anything spectacular, but I’ll try my best!
