Weekend Recap

Happy Monday! I am back to the grind today after a glorious three week break from school and work that has left me feeling rejuvenated, refreshed, and ready to take on the semester [and all that comes with it!]. 

This semester promises to be challenging with an extra class loaded onto my schedule and my continued work with psychiatric services for my masters program.  I’m still teaching three TurboKick classe- and am planning on taking on a few more responsibilities- at the Wellness Center.  I’ve got the Personal Training exam to sit for any week now.  And I’ve got a growing baby to think about and nourish now. Smile 

All wonderful and exciting things that push me past my limitations and help me grow!   

With so much on the horizon, it was important to me that I spend my final weekend of freedom doing things I can’t typically do during the semester [or that become more like chores than sources of enjoyment].  

  • I baked and cooked.  And prepped food for the week.


It feels so good to be back in the kitchen again!  Prepping food for the week is so helpful, but sometimes life is so busy that I simply can’t find the time for it.  This weekend I made homemade protein bars, which I adapted from Ashley’s Sun Butter Banana Protein Bars [just swapped the sun butter for peanut butter, left the bananas more chunky, and used a Tbsp of baking chocolate instead of 1/4 c of dark].  As far as homemade protein bars go, they’re probably my favorite so far! 


I also continue to be intimidated by my new crockpot.  So far I’ve made a handful of recipes, but nothing overly amazing.  If anyone has any crockpot recipes to share, I’d greatly appreciate it! 

  • I went hiking with the ‘ohana.IMAG0272

Alright, obviously we go for hikes often, even during finals week, but this hike was pretty spectacular.  We decided to start the Pali trail from opposite sides [the guys did the full 5.5 mile trek while we only hiked about a mile in and a mile back], meeting closer to Lahaina.  From a shady spot, we spent the afternoon watching humpback whales and enjoying the sunset in each others’ company.

Reading is probably one of my most beloved hobbies, but I rarely make time for it because if it’s a good book, I can get so engulfed in the story that I refuse to do anything else until the last page has been read.  It interferes severely with productivity.  Anyway, I finished The Hunger Games; devoured the first two books in less than two days and took two days to finish the third because I forced myself to do other things.  I loved the series and was incredibly moved by the message.  I hope every young adult reads the books. 

We also did not-so-fun preparatory things like wash our linens and shop at Costco, but those things must be done. Winking smile

I’ve got a bit more prep to do before my class tonight, but I’m definitely excited for this semester!  It feels like a clean slate.

For years now Ben and I have been asked the question to which our reply was always, “We’re not ready yet.” 


Well friends, our time has come. Smile

Ben and I have always been big kids at heart and had a very special connection with little ones, so having kids was never a matter or if, but when. When we finally came to the realization that we’re never going to feel 100% prepared to have a baby, we started tuning in to our intuition and letting things happen naturally. 


[Yep, we’re pregnant.]

This whole pregnancy thing is so new to me [I’m only about 9 weeks] and a lot could still happen, but I’ve always felt an urge to share my journey. I feel called to share this process as well, and I truly believe that no matter what happens, it is the best thing for me to write through it. 

Keeping this a secret for the past few weeks has been immensely difficult, especially since just looking at food is painful some days, let alone trying to post recipes!  Now that you’re in on the secret, maybe you’ll understand a bit more about where I’m coming from. 

There is so much to be said and I’m excited for the opportunity to document my journey on GPD with a focus on keeping my pregnancy simple yet significant, as always.  I still plan on posting healthy recipes and motivational tidbits, but I also plan to throw some pregnancy updates in the mix, too.

This year, we spent another glorious Thanksgiving on the island of Hawai`i with the ‘ohana…


and Ben and I had something extra special to be thankful for.
